The expiry date on a carton of eggs may not always be right, especially if you have had them in the refrigerator. Maybe if you have your own producing chickens, you may not know how long the eggs have been sitting around for. Here is a simple test to work out whether your eggs are edible or not with the float test.
Note, this is not a sure way of confirming, once you have done the test, crack the egg open and give it a sniff, if it smells off its most likely gone bad.
- Pour some water into a bowl
- Place the egg into the bowl.
- If the egg lays on its side at the bottom of the bowl, it is fresh
- If the egg stands upright in the bowl, it is older but could be OK to eat
- If the egg floats towards the top, the egg is old and probably shouldn't be eaten

Did you know that the float test is also a way to work out whether the egg has been fertilized or not.
